Lolo Pass Visitor Center (MM 174.4) – is where Lewis & Clark crossed over Lolo Pass in the Bitterroot Mountains. This beautiful rest area and interpretive center has information about the Lewis & Clark expedition and the 1877 flight of the Nez Perce. No cell phone service here. There is a working pay phone if you need to make a call while at the visitor’s center. You are in Idaho (Pacific Time). Remember to set your clocks back an hour. Get ready for a winding road for the next 99 miles. Slow down and enjoy the drive. DeVoto Grove (MM 165)–This picnicking site has short loop trails that pass through stands of ancient western red cedar some of which are over 2000 years old. Colgate Licks (MM 147.9)–Named for George Colgate, the 1893 Carlin Party camp cook. A short one mile interpretive trail winds through a “variety of ecotones associated with a natural mineral lick”. Wilderness Gateway (MM123)–Travelers willing to walk or ride a horse can enter The Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness at Wilderness Gateway. The “Frank Church” is the largest contiguous wilderness in the Lower 48 (2,366,757 acres} Take a moment to experience views of steep, rugged mountains, deep canyons, and the wild whitewater of the Lochsa River. Lochsa Historical Ranger Station (MM 122) --Listed in 1978 on the National Register of Historic Places, the Lochsa Historical Ranger Station is managed to preserve the nostalgic character of a 1920s working ranger station.
