Lewiston – (MM 1) is Idaho’s lowest elevation at 710 feet above sea level and is Idaho’s only inland seaport. Ant and Yellowjacket (MM 10.9) – a lesson for all of us on what can happen when we argue. Spalding Mission (MM 12.2)—in 1838, the Rev. Henry Spalding established his mission here. Nez Perce National Historical Park's Visitor Center is located across the river on U.S. Highway 95. Indian Houses (MM 27.6) – People have lived next to this good fishing hole for 10,000 years. Now it is a popular rest area stop for modern-day travelers. Canoe Camp (MM –40) -- At this Nez Perce National Historical Park site Lewis and Clark and their Corps of Discovery made canoes in 1805. The site features a canoe, historical information and picnic areas. Visible from Hwy 12, Dworshak Dam is the third tallest dam in the U.S. and the tallest straight-axis concrete dam in the Western Hemisphere. Visitor Center favorites are videos about the dam construction and the last log drive on the North Fork of the Clearwater. Gold Rush Ferry (MM 52.5) – An old ferry near here took thousands of eager fortune hunters to a trail that climbed out of this canyon to rich gold fields discovered at Pierce in 1860. Take a side trip on Highway 11 to the Weippe Prairie, where Lewis and Clark met a Nez Perce band that helped save their 1805 expedition. Continuing on, you can reach Idaho's oldest public building - Pierce Courthouse, built in 1862. |
