Idaho State Square and Round Dance Festival -- Dance and Explore In 2024
Travel Information …Coming from the South... US HWY 95
Fabulous Florence (MM 205.6) -- The original town has vanished, but millions in gold came from the high mountain basin around Florence between 1861 and 1863. Visible directly across the river is a pit left by large-scale hydraulic mining. If you look carefully, gated mining claims are still viewable on the right hand side of Hwy 95. White Bird Hill (MM 227) -- For 60 years after construction was completed in 1915, the old White Bird Grade (across the valley) served as Idaho's only north-south highway. Many tortuous curves and switchbacks which, if placed together made 37 complete circles- let the old road climb 2,900 feet in 14 miles. The new grade, originally constructed in 1975, has seen significant improvements over the years and still serves as Idaho’s only north-south highway. Nez Perce War (MM 227) -- Near the base of this hill, more than 100 cavalrymen and volunteers met disaster in the opening battle of the Nez Perce War. Camas Prairie (MM 233.6) -- Named for the Blue Flowering Camas--an important root food for all interior Northwestern Indians. Replica of Columbian Mammoth (MM 240) -- One of the actual mammoth tusks excavated from Tolo Lake is displayed at the Bi-centennial Museum in Grangeville, Currently flooded with water, scientists believe that Tolo Lake may be the largest mammoth graveyard in the United States, with up to 200 mammoth skeletons. Kamiah is just 33 miles away….take SH13 for a drive along the South Fork of the Clearwater River or Old HWY 7 if you prefer a route across the prairie. |
